Veriflora / REF / 448 / 2014

Veriflora is a certification process for sustainably grown flowers and plants. It is currently implemented by over 50 farms worldwide, yielding an estimated 1 billion stems. Veriflora certification is administered by SCS Global Services (SCS), a third-party certifier of environmental, sustainability and agricultural product quality claims.

Veriflora certifies only "flowers sold in the United States", for which they audit and "impose strict environmental and labor standards on farms"; however there is no requirement that the plants be "fully organic." The gardening giant FTD "decided to stock flowers certified by VeriFlora".
Standards

The Veriflora Certification Program is accredited under ISO/IEC Guide 65, the international standard for third-party product certifiers.

Key components of the Veriflora program are fair labor practices, sustainable crop production, waste management and the conservation of resources. Growers are limited in the agrochemicals they use, and are required to safely store hazardous wastes and materials in accordance with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, as well as move towards traditional organic certification.
